What you learn:
- Which tasks belong in a daily stable plan
- How to split work fairly between grooms, riders and stable staff
- How to keep the plan up to date when things change
Why a daily plan matters
In most stables the same questions come up every morning: Who rides which horse? Which horses go out? Who feeds at noon? When the answers only exist in one person's head, mistakes happen – a horse is not turned out, a medication is forgotten or two people do the same job. A written daily plan solves this. Everyone can see what needs to be done, by whom and when.
Step 1: List all recurring tasks
Start by writing down everything that happens in your stable on a normal day. Typical tasks are:
- Feeding (morning, noon, evening) and special feeds or supplements
- Turnout and bringing in
- Mucking out and bedding
- Riding, lunging, walker and other training
- Grooming, rugging and hoof care
- Medication and treatments
Step 2: Assign tasks to people
Every task needs one clear owner. Assign tasks by name, not by “somebody”. If several people share a task, write down who is responsible for checking it. This makes it easy to see what is still open at the end of the day.
Step 3: Plan horse by horse
Each horse has its own routine. A good plan shows for every horse what happens today: training, turnout, feeding notes and appointments such as the farrier or vet. This is especially important in larger stables, where not everyone knows every horse.
Step 4: Make the plan visible to everyone
A plan only works if everyone can see it. Many stables use a whiteboard in the barn. This works well for a few horses, but it reaches its limits when plans change often or when people are not on site. A digital plan on the phone or on a screen in the stable can be updated from anywhere, and everyone sees the latest version.
Step 5: Review and adjust
Check once a week whether the plan still fits. Are some people overloaded? Are tasks forgotten regularly? Small changes keep the plan realistic.
